Our classroom is in the northwest corner of the historic University Heights Center located at the north edge of Seattle's University District neighborhood.
Room 107 is a spacious, light-filled hub of creativity, which includes an alcove with participant cubbies and a second smaller room that serves as our office (and sometimes also as a painting studio, kitchen, and lighting lab). The classroom itself is loosely divided into a variety of child-centered areas allowing kids to self-direct activities throughout the day.
The University Heights building and grounds are extensions of our classroom for our one hour of daily outdoor active time (rain or shine!). We have easy access to our own plot in the neighborhood p-patch garden and the University District pocket park. Recess on the recently rebuilt playground is a daily activity.
Our participants feel a strong sense of ownership over all these spaces as part of their academy. TDA has a p-patch garden which our students plan and tend throughout the academic year. Food crops from our p-patch become snacks throughout the year.
